The island of Gran Canaria has a long tradition of spectator sports, such as soccer, basketball and motor rallies, in addition to autochthonous sports, such as Canarian wrestling, juego del palo and lateen sailing. It is said that sport is part of the Canarian character.
Gran Canaria is the capital Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, in the northeast of the island, is one of Spain's largest cities.
The climate is subtropical semi-arid for most locations, but it may vary a lot depending of where you are going. For the main touristic resorts the weather is mostly comfortable.
